Select an essay topic and deadline
It’s not uncommon to have a topic assigned to you when you first start writing. You will be given the chance to choose the topic of your essays as you progress in grade level. Make sure your topic supports the type of paper you’re expected to write when you pick it for your essay.
A general topic will suffice if you’re expected to produce a paper that’s a general overview. If you’re expected to write a specific analysis, the topic should be fairly specific. Let’s assume that the objective of your essay is to write an overview. The topic “CANADA” would be ideal.
If the objective is to write a specific analysis, “CANADA ” would be too general. “Canadian Nature: Deforestation” is a topic you need to narrow down.
The first thing to do if you’re expected to choose your own topic is to define the purpose of your essay. Are you trying to convince? Why do you want to explain how to do something? Do you mean to educate about a person, place, thing or idea?
Components of a good essay

- Explanations of something are what the expository is known for.
- Argumentative, persuade essays make a claim about a topic and provide evidence and arguments to support it. The purpose of an essay is to convince the reader that a claim is true.
It’s time to come up with a purpose for your essay. Pick multiple topics right off the bat. Take some time to think and compare. Make a list of all the different topics that fit the purpose of your essay by taking a piece of paper and writing it down. Eliminate the topics that are difficult or not relevant once they’re all down on paper. Get rid of topics that are too challenging or that you don’t like. Once you have narrowed your list down to just a few topics, you can make a final decision.
